Hyundai P0298 Engine Oil Over Temperature Condition

Description

OBD-II Trouble Code Description for P0298 Hyundai

Engine Oil Over Temperature

What does this mean?

OBD2 Code P0298 Hyundai definition:
Indicates the Engine Oil Temperature Protection (EOT) strategy in the Power Train Control Module (PCM) has been activated. This temporarily prohibits high engine speed operation by disabling injectors, reducing the risk of engine damage from high engine oil temperature. Note: On engines which are equipped with an oil temperature sensor, the PCM reads oil temperature to determine if it is excessive. When an oil temperature sensor is not present, the PCM uses an oil algorithm to infer actual temperature. Engine shutdown strategy function is the same on vehicles with and without oil temperature sensors.

Symptoms

Possible sumptoms of OBD code P0298 Hyundai
– Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) – Lack/Loss of Power – Engine Surge

Causes

Possible causes of OBD code P0298 Hyundai
– Very high engine RPM for an extended period of time. – Overheating condition. – Malfunction EOT sensor or circuit (vehicles w/EOT sensor). The Error code is generally activated on detection of the following conditions: P0298 Hyundai is set when the vehicle has been running below 1,000 rpm and less than 20 mg/stroke MFDES with EOT sensor signal reading above 110?C (230?F). The time to set the fault is dependent on EOT and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) temperatures, and can vary between approx. 15 to 45 minutes

Possible Solutions

1. Inspect EOT sensor circuitry at sensor and PCM. Inspect for damage, loose or pushed-out pins, loose or poorly crimped wires 2. If connectors are ok check cooling system, radiator, fan/clutch operation, thermostat 3. If cooling system is ok carry out KOEO On-Demand Self Test 4. If other fault codes are present after test repair them, if only P0298 Hyundai is present clear codes 5. Let vehicles sit for 8 hours and then KOEO 6. Monitor EOT in live data 7. If EOT sensor reading is above 110*C(230*F) replace sensor 8. IF EOT is below 110*C check continuous memory DTCs 9. If P0298 Hyundai is present replace PCM

2. Look up the other OBD II Trouble Codes, please use the search box. Enter the 5 character trouble codes in the search box and submit the search.

3. Don’t assume a particular OBD-II code means the same for other auto manufacturers as there are many makes specific codes in use.

4. If your OBD-II trouble codes are for a different car, select that vehicle series before searching for the diagnostic codes because not all OBD2 codes used by one manufacture are used by the other makes.
